Worcester can be one of the hottest towns in summer, temperatures above the thirties is normal and despite what the locals believe, there isn’t really wind. Also, it always appears to rain around the town. Yet the climate is perfect to produce some of the finest red wines which I love to drink, so I guess I can’t complain too much.
But the fact that this Boland town can become very hot is a fact. The Saturday in question was just another fine example of the heat you can experience there. Seven and a half hours in thirty-seven degrees and no cloud in the sky is pretty hot. Thank goodness for Powerade and water. And it’s not just the temperature which got us of to a hot start. Early morning one of the competitors had severe problems when his car caught fire. This was luckily dealt with quickly and thanks to a lot of competitors acting in the true spirit of sportsmanship, he managed to compete in that very same car.
Very good racing soon became the order of the day and the only real memory which remained of the unbearable heat, was a suntan.
