Scenes from beyond the great beyond

This past weekend myself and eight friends went away on a “Boys weekend away.”  All I knew is that we were going to go to a farm.  Now what I know about farms are scary.  I know all the good red wines I love to drink started out on farms, and I know that Guns n’ Roses did a song about farm life.  Last year I discovered a lot of people on Facebook likes to play farm games.  Still, it’s a weekend away with some of my best friends and after some events of last week, that was exactly what I needed.

First off, I discovered that this was about four hours away from Cape-Town.  Secondly, the last bit of civilisation we’ll see will be the town Ceres.  Third discovery, that will be the halfway point of the trip.  Fourth shock, half the journey would be on a dirt road.  Number five, we’ll be in the heart of nowhere I’ve ever been or heard of before.  Six, there is absolutely nothing there.

And with nothing I mean completely nothing.  It’s an outstretched piece of land that kind off resemble Chernobyl on day three after the explosion.  It’s a place where a stone farmer can sit on a potential goldmine and if you stand close enough to a piece of bush, you’re big toe might get thirty percent shade.  There’s nothing and beyond that is nothing.  It can qualify as the loneliest place in the world.  In fact, while I was setting up my tripod for the first image on here, there was a few seconds of no breeze, no sound.  Just quiet, just your thoughts, just nothing.  This was a unique experience and I loved it.  I don’t know why, but I just couldn’t think of a better place to be.

I’ve been there once and next time someone speaks the word I’ll definitely go again.  I never thought I’d say that I’ll be addicted to an area, but I am.  Time constraints and other activities kept me away from taking more photos, but I’d love to go back, take a walkabout with my camera and a few bottles of water.  It’s a place where you learn to find the beauty in simplicity.  No rush, except to be in time for hot farm kitchen coffee.  Next time – count me in!!
