John Thompson - MBCV Technician of the year

Working for Mercedes-Benz surely does have it’s perks. To date I haven’t yet succeeded in getting a car shoot, but there are year-end function, award ceremony’s, etc. Now meet John Thompson, a technician who joined us a while ago from East-London. I think his more passionate about his work than most people I’ve ever met. In fact I don’t think I’ve met anyone who’s as passionate about anything as he is about his job. Usually by the time I arrive at the office in the morning (and I do think I’m either the fourth or fifth person to arrive), John will be hard at work already. Same story of course in the evening when we leave. I’ve never really bothered to think of who locks up after him largely because I’ve never really believed that he goes home to begin with. Where Chuck Norris, Werner Koekemoer, The Hoff, Herschelle Gibbs and The Stig ends, John Thompson continues. I’m sure in recent times he’s surpassed Duracell batteries, the Energizer bunny. I’m sure he knows the answer to who came first between the egg and the chicken since he was probably waiting them in on that day as well.

So, the technician of the year award was not just something he could be proud off, it’s also an energy boost to him. Just after receiving this, he already wanted to have a photo done of himself with the trophy. We agreed to meet up on the premises one morning at around 6 A.M. This would give me enough time to compose a good shot, be selective with my background, etc. Wrong, when I arrived you already had John waiting there, telling me where to stand, guiding angles, ensuring that the ground is clean, ensuring that the truck he wanted to stand in front of is clean, etc. I’m sure given the opportunity I would’ve had my camera set up for me as well. I think that’s probably the most natural smile I’ve ever seen on any photo. Yeah, John Thompson, certainly an inspiration to all of us when it comes to showing pride in your work.
